Red Sails in the Sunset

Mick writes:

This Rock'n'roll standard was actually written in Northern Ireland in 1935 by Hugh Williams (real name Wilhelm Grosz) with lyrics by one Jimmy Kennedy, the red sails in question being those of a local yacht, the 'Kitty of Coleraine'. It was subsequently a hit by Bing Crosby, and later, of course, became the Fats Domino classic that we all know.

I think it's a funky, bluesy little tune and it was a lot of fun to record. After some experimentation I settled on a mainly acoustic arrangement with slide soloing on the old 1930s Harmony archtop, built just three or four years after the song was written, 89 years ago.

Recorded at Rockfold Studio 2023 / 24. Released on Spotify etc 17th May 2024.

Mick Clarke - Red Sails in the Sunset Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Carry my loved one
Home safely to me

She sailed at the dawning
All day I've been blue
Red sails in the sunset
I'm trusting in you

Swift wings you must borrow
Make straight for the shore
Yeah but after tomorrow
Well go sailing no more

Red sails in the sunset
Way out on the sea
Carry my loved one
Home safely to me
