Yes, this is that song you half remember from the early 60s - "way up north" - it'll mean something to some of you. Johnny Horton wrote and released this song in 1960 - later that same year he died in a traffic accident. He had also recorded the original "Battle of New Orleans" and co-wrote "Honky Tonk Man" which Dwight Yoakham did on his first album. Great song.
Anyway, North to Alaska is the stirring tale of a bunch of hardy adventurers off to seek their fortune in the frozen North. Big Sam, with George who was his partner, and his brother Billy too. Great stuff. I always liked the song and fancied rockin' it up, with some slide guitar but no "way up north". Hope you like it.
This track features on "The Country Rockin' Record" compilation, and this version for the new single re-release in 2023 has been remixed and remastered. You can't keep a good song down. Y'all.
