Mick writes:
Sonny Boy Williamson's "Help Me" was one of the first blues tracks I heard that really got to me. And why shouldn't it - that amazing mix of smoky organ, smoky harp and smoky vocals, set over a classic groove. Clearly it got to others also, and the song became a staple in the repertoires of the 60s British blues boom bands.. Ten Years After, Black Cat Bones and others.
I've often used the song as an opener when playing small clubs - but I approached it in a slower, quieter kind of way. It was a song that could start off at a whisper, if necessary, and build from there.
But for this recording I decided to come at it from a completely different angle, turning it into a spritely rockin' boogie. A supercharged "Green Onions" with the Strat wailing on the solos. I like it a lot, hope you agree. "Help Me" released online Friday 28th January 2022.
