Mick writes:

A great song written by British rock legend Paul Rodgers.

This was written, I think, during the time that Paul had formed a band called Peace, with drummer Mick Underwood and my very good friend Mac McDonald on bass. Indeed I think that Mac had some influence in writing the song, but I can't ask him now, as he passed away just recently, in August this year. He probably had something to do with those strange chords which I can't quite fathom out.. would have been typical Mac.

From Mac I have on a CD a version of this song recorded by Peace, from their live session on John Peel's BBC Radio One show.

The overall feel of that recording is infinitely better, (I think), than the version released by Free, although it's a pretty loose jam. Paul's on guitar and states the riff perfectly, and his vocals are immaculate. Mac and Mick Underwood complete the ensemble flawlessly.

So I'm not trying to be Paul Rodgers (falls of his chair laughing at the idea).. and I've approached the song in a more understated fashion. Basically I just wanted to enjoy the luxury of recording such a great song.. such a great great riff.

It was a real pleasure, and I hope a small tribute to my friend Mac.. one of the unknown heros of the British Blues Rock boom of the 60s and 70s. And a nod to the immense talents of Paul Rodgers, Koss, drummer Simon Kirke.. all those guys.

Great times.. Zeppelin, Cream, early Fleetwood Mac, Free.. We were lucky to have lived through such days. And on we go...

Dedicated to my good friend Stuart 'Mac' McDonald and his wife Jan.

Mick Clarke - Heartbreaker Well, my maker
Must 've been a hard heartbreaker
I said my maker
Must 've been a hard heartbreaker
I'm breaking my own heart
Tryin' to love a faker

Like a blind man
My little house is on fire
Just like a blind man
My little house is on fire
I'm burning my own eyes out
Tryin' to reach the door

Well, the sun is shining
But it sure don't seem to reach my heart
Well, the sun is shining
But it sure don't seem to reach my heart
I'm wasting my whole life
Tryin' to make a new start
