Winter Sun

The 2024 Singles Album

Mick writes:

Here's a collection of recent single releases from early 2024 and a couple from 23. Plus the brand new 'Winter Sun'.

Winter Sun For family reasons I recently found myself spending a lot of time in my old haunt of South London. Strolling the streets of sunny Streatham one January day I was inspired to write 'Winter Sun', adding in some made up stuff about someone having trouble with his girlfriend..(not me)!

Just Dropped In has become a personal favourite, and has also turned out to be a popular streaming track, particularly on the US platform 'Pandora'. Written by American songwriter Mickey Newberry it was a hit back in the 60s for Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, and was featured in the Coen Brothers' cult movie 'The Big Lebowski'. It's basically a drugs song, but I think the lyric can apply to a variety of mental conditions, and I think the track has a solid groove which I like.

I Like It Like That An R&B classic by Chris Kenner, much covered in the UK in the sixties by popular beat combos such as the Dave Clarke Five and Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers. Or, as my good friend Mick Hawksworth once announced loudly (in Cliff's presence).. it's Cliff Bennett and his Rebel Trousers!

I was amused - I don't know if Cliff was. But a few drinks had been taken. Anyway, I put this out just before Christmas 2023 - sounded like party music to me.

River's Invitation Percy Mayfield's song, but I think I first heard it by Alexis Korner, and I've included his riff in my version. I did jam with Alexis once.. I think we did 'Kansas City'. But it was in a strange little place in Bagshot, Surrey, called 'Pantiles'. A sort of coffee house atmosphere.. Alexis was just there with a bass player.

Don't Wanna Boogie Aah, this is one of mine. You can tell by the silly lyrics. But it is fun and it does rock. Slide guitar on my 1930s Harmony archtop with the Elmore James pickup. All good.

You Shook Me Muddy's classic of course, much covered by blues rockers including Zeppelin. Well I'm no Muddy Waters, but the track does get some steam up as it goes along.. not bad.

Strongo Written for an imaginary strongman.. why not? A guitar instrumental inspired by Freddie's ' The Stumble'. Good little jam I think.

Digging This Trench From a chance remark by my friend Mac McDonald. Blues Rock, and none the worse for it.

Union Road Here's a song I wrote in my sleep about my adult youth in South London, circa 70s / 80s. Maybe not 'the blues' but it's an honest statement - it rocks and I like it. Recently remastered for this collection.

Saturday Nite at the Duck Pond The moment I remembered this track I knew I had to have a go at it. I used to buy loads of daft instrumentals like this when I was young.. I still enjoy them. Originally by a very under rated band called the Cougars, from Bristol. Good stuff.

I hope you enjoy this very eclectic compilation.. all my influences are in there somewhere.. blues, rock, daft instrumentals. Keep Rockin...

Mick Clarke - Winter Sun Your love is like the winter sun
warm but not too hot
sometime tease me with a taste
and hold back what you got
or shoot it at me like gun
then hold back like the winter sun

don't know much about the gambler's blues
I can only tell you what I have learned
I think I'm winning all your love
but it's always on your terms
and when you got me on the run
warm me with your winter sun

walkin on south london street
bright sunshine winter day
shadows on the street grow cold
I have to look away
time to take in what's goin' down
walkin in the winter sun

I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Someone painted "april fool" in big black letters on a "dead end" sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
I said i just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Come on
Come on
Come on - let me show you where it's at
The name of the place is I like it like that

They got a little place across the track
The name of the place is I like it like that
Well you can do anything that you wanna do
And we gonna rock away all our blues
Come on
Come on
Come on - let me show you where it's at
The name of the place is I like it like that

last time I was there man I lost my shoes
some guy up there he was shoutin' the blues
The people was screamin' yellin' out for more
And all they were sayin' was, "Go man go"
Come on
Come on
Come on - let me show you where it's at
The name of the place is I like it like that

Come on
Come on
Come on - let me show you where it's at
The name of the place is I like it like that

Come on - let me show you where it's at
The name of the place is I like it like that

Well I went to the river
and the river spoke to me
I said I'm tired and I'm lonely
won't someone help me be
river said if you can't find no peace of mind
come and make your home with me

yeah I been across the country
and I played in every town
well I was lookin for an answer
no answer could be found
now you know which i'm headin'
yeah man I'm goin' down..

well I dont want to leave here
with my heart all filled with pain
mm I been searchin' for a long time
but the heartache still remain
still one day we be together
be together once again

Well I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
Yeah you do too

y'know when the rhythm
get into you
make your eyeball twitch
make you boogie too
Well I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
'less I boogie with you

yeah stone cold boogie
put you in a trance
get ya on ya feet
y'just have to dance
well the devil got the boogie
and he called you out
you say I don't wanna boogie
he say I have my doubt

Well I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
I know you do
I Don't Wanna Boogie
'less I boogie with you

You know you shook me, baby
You shook me all night long
You know you shook me, baby
You shook me all night long
Oh, you kept on shaking me, darling
Oh, you messed up my happy home

You know you move me, baby
Just like a hurricane
You know you move me, baby
Just like a hurricane
Oh, you know you move me, darling
Just like an earthquake moves the land

Oh, sometimes I wonder
What I'm gon' do
Oh, sometimes I wonder
What I'm gon' do
Hey the way you shook me darling
Whoa, I'm mad in love with you

Yeah the way you shook me darling
You don't know how good make me feel

Feels like I got one more mile to go
one more turn - one ride at the rodeo
listen out for a tune on the radio
lookin' for a tune that I used to know
no fuss - not us - that ain't our style
Yeah I know it might take a little while
But I been digging this trench for a long long time

got my ticket gonna stand in line
don't look around to see who's right behind
got enough in my pocket for a bottle of wine
got my pay just to get me by for another day
take a drink have a think say a word and then
knocked down gettin' up again
cos I been digging this trench for a long long time

lead me down on a road I know
down to the beach to a place I used to go
bright light so white and the sand like snow
big moon shine like a spoon out in the night
I need a hot beer bring it right over here
and a little boogie blues that's ringing out clear
cos I been digging this trench for a long long time

South London heat - sticky August summer in the evening time
Young and alive - no money no worries and I'm feeling fine
The Northern Line gets me to Stockwell and it drops me off
There's a blues jam happening and they're rockin - yeah rockin down at The Plough

Need a rehearsal have a band meeting yeah we gonna figure a new plan
Look at some pics talk about strategies gotta meet with the man
Well I may get sick I may get lonely, but I know that I'll never grow old
Humming a tune like a loon walking down on Union Road

Meeting with friends so many friends where did they go?
Every night was a party we were so lucky but we did not know
False memories entwine and conjure up false stories adventures and so..
South London days - good friends, good times and Union Road
